Team WHAYNE's riders are split evenly between Louisville and Lexington, while our shop sponsor, Main Street Bikes, centers us in Shelbyville. We are truly a regional squad, well-rounded and stacked with varied strengths and rider types. With the personalities and pedigrees shared below, our racers are sure to light up every race!

"Bike Lexington 2009 Cat 4/5 race. I was riding for UK at the time and had a blast working with my teammate Drew Lavey. We made a sick move through the S turn followed by a perfect leadout to take the win!"

I've been racing since 2008 and since my first race I've been addicted, always trying to improve and get faster. I have always done something active throughout my life. With cycling I get to be outside, ride with friends, and have some fun letting my competive juices flow on a hard ride or during an intense Crit! I'm looking forward to racing with Team WHAYNE in 2012! Alot of work has been done to get this team started and now it's time to reap the benefits. We have some great guys on the team who are ready to have fun racing together and tear it up on the road and trails in 2012!

"First crit = first win. Jude Clark - Shawnee Park 2010. Super nervous beforehand but all that disappeared once the race started. Went full gas with 200 m to go and held off the field."

When I graduated college in 2001, I was 250 lbs and in horrible shape. I bought a road bike the day after graduation and starting working my way back down to a reasonable weight. 60 lbs later I'm 190 lbs and in the best shape of my life. I started racing in 2010 and fell in love with the competition. This year my wife starting racing both road and cyclocross so our race weekends are now a family affair.

"Best race experience would have to be PUR Tour a few years ago in a 1/2/3 field with 2 other teammates. I went to the front for a planned lead-out and drilled it as hard as I could for a full lap, turned around to see both my guys smiling, with the entire race completely strung out. "

I ride my bike because I love to. I love to race every chance I get, and most importantly, with teammates . Period. I started riding BMX when I was young, moved to the road in high school, took some time away, then returned to road racing 7 years ago, and will keep racing as long as I able to. I'm very proud to be a part of Team WHAYNE and look forward to 2012!

"At the Spring Valley Road Race, a climb separated six riders and I from the main peloton. Fearing an organized chase, we dropped the hammer. The pace was break-neck, and before long riders started to drop off. One, two, three… until only myself and another rider remained. I have never felt more alive in any competitive sport- I felt like the gazelle that got away from the lion. At the line, I ended up with second after close sprint. Standing on the podium felt great, but not quite as awesome as riding the break. I look forward to doing both again with Team Whayne!"

I love to ride, and ride fast. Racing provides me the opportunity and motivation to change a hobby into a healthy lifestyle. I fell in love with cycling when I discovered all the quiet, gorgeous country roads. Once I began racing, I became addicted to the lifestyle: eating right, getting adequate sleep, and the amazing feeling after a painful workout session. I am really excited to share all these with Team Whanye.

"2011 Hyde Park was my hardest effort to date racing bikes. My result was not the best top 20 but if not for a wreck in front of me in last few laps I would have been top 5. The amazing thing about this race was that I started 89 after call ups and could have challenged for the podium. The race was a 30 minute criterium and in that time ride with over 351 watts ave power was a monumental effort. I feel like this race was a test of my true metal. I wish the wreck would not have happend but sometimes results are not the full story."

My name is Steve Hulsman and I am 43 yrs of age. I grew up in Louisville Kentucky and attended Trinity High School. I raced BMX bikes for many years as a youth and attended the war of the stars on several occations. I was nationally raked by the time I was 12 yrs of age. The beginning of a love for bike racing. I also raced mtn bikes in the 90's in and around the Louisville area. A year and a half ago I started riding road bikes and quickly wanted to feed my competitive edge and start racing. I have one year of racing behind me and have podiumed in many events. I look forward to Racing on Team WHAYNE as a cat3.

Road Racing

"Moving up the pack on hard climbs a la Mt. Victory."

I fell in love with cycling because the intensity in racing is second to none. The surging adrenalin of trying to outrun a chasing pack, to me, is a throw back to our animal instincts of staying out of a predator's grasp. Cycling coupled with Team Whayne is a perfect mix of competition and camaraderie. Racing and training with an entire team of strong riders only pushes me to race and train ever harder. Without a cohesive team, like that of Team Whayne, success would be significantly more difficult and cycling would not be nearly as much fun.

Road Racing

"2010 USGP in Louisville. First Cyclocross race. Felt like I was in a Roman Chariot race, all the dust, the 100+ racers, riders falling and flipping everywhere."

To be a part of any team is a wonderful thing, the friendships, the emotional ride, and always the memories. I ride to pave a path for my two boys,(Marcus 8, Miles 4). I ride with my wife so we can have those special moments together (like when she curses me on my choice of HILLY route). 2012 will be my third year racing. We started the "Sunrise Bakery" team in 2009, then soon joined with Tom at Bikes On Main/Main Street Velo. We wanted more than just show up and race then go home. Friendships, you know, dinner at someones house the night before a big race. Friendly trash talking or attacking each other on team training rides, planning fun rides like our Annual Lex to London ride, we wanted this to fun. I am very proud to represent Team Whayne and Main Street Velo. As a teammate, I will push you and sacrifice myself. YEEEAAAA!!

"2011 OVCX Season Finale, Indianapolis - 6" of snow. 2nd both days, overall series winner for Cat 3 Open Men."

I've always loved riding since I was 5 years old. Started out in BMX, now I get my fix with Cyclocross. For me riding is a lifestyle; the people I meet, the friends I have, discipline and focus it takes, the fact that I can ride with my wife, and to have something that pushes me physically, and challenges me to find ways to be better.

Cyclocross and Road Racing

"Babler Extreme, a very hilly circuit race. 200m from the start, on the first climb, I get away with 4 other guys and we make it stick. For the first time, I got the sprint just right. The guy I outsprinted rides for Garmin now. Damn Juniors."

Cycling is an addiction. One that comes with many positives, and the few occasional setbacks. Crashing and the disappointment of bad form come hand in hand with the euphoria of training, the camaraderie of good teammates, and the elation when it all pays off with a good race day. I've been riding for nearly 10 years, training like an elite since being bitten by the bug, but only racing off and on through graduate school while plagued with a statistically impossible crash record. 2012 with Team WHAYNE is the year that it all comes together. We will have a squad equally suited for the gallop to the line in a crit, the hours at threshold in a road race, or the mud splattered redlining of cyclocross. Team WHAYNE - we make the race.

Road Racing, Cyclocross, and Mountain Bike

"2010 UCI3 in Cincinnati was my first experience racing cyclocross. After three straight days of racing capped off with a top 5 at Harbin Park, I was cooked. But I was also hungry for more. The big stage and the huge fields made the racing a truly memorable experience."

I simply love to ride my bike. Cycling keeps my life balanced and well rounded. It has become a part of who I am and thanks to many lifelong friendships and unique opportunities, it is a large part of who I will be. Entering my third season of racing, I am honored to be a part of Team WHAYNE and I cannot wait to suffer, compete, and find success with the many great riders on our roster.
