Team WHAYNE Sweeps the Podium

Steve Hulsman, Andrew Boyd, and Doug Burton Dominate Last Laps @ Frankfort Criterium

Jason Monk is fast. Super strong, with unmatched ability to suffer, he has proven capable on his own right of winning races. Yet to him, the team's goals come first. When we need a special rider to pick up the pace and drop our fastest sprinters off close to the line, he comes charging to the front to put the hurt on. Here's Jason with the play-by-play of the Frankfort Criterium:

"Team WHAYNE met on Friday the day before the race and went through a training session with Curtis Tolson - a great coach with a huge well of experience who knows how to explain things in a way that gets through to people. We learned a lot, had a ton of fun playing with the big Cat machinery at the WHAYNE Supply Depot, and got our game plan figured out. This was our race to put it all together. "

Andrew Boyd takes the Win at the Shelby County Omnium over Father's Day Weekend

Andrew had a strong showing for Team WHAYNE by placing 2nd in the time trial and winning the road race which put him in first place for the Omnium. Here's how Andrew describes the road race:

"EPIC!!!! That about sums up the road race. 9 man break away on the first lap, which I started by counter-attacking the early break after the downhill section. I looked back and Andrew Beckman was on my wheel, which meant we had a chance. Then the two other overall leaders bridged up and we started working together. A few more riders bridged up by the end of the climb. Thankfully Jason Monk (Team Whayne) was one of the ones who bridged up. I was pretty happy to see a teammate in the break away. Although I was willing to take on the other riders by myself, having a teammate takes some of the pressure off and gives you some extra encouragement."

After important races, any good team will talk out the flow of the action, identifying crucial moments and discussing the heat-of-the-action responses. As this was our first exposure to the strategy of defending an overall placing, we thought our supporters and friends might be interested in the play-by-play, direct from the fingers of Andrew Boyd.

Team WHAYNE's First International Podium!

Steve Hulsman 4th Overall in Masters 40+ at 2012 Tour of the Bahamas

The last weekend in January, Steve Hulsman migrated south in search of warm temps and hot racing. Accompanied by a smattering of Louisvillians, some retired professionals, fast guys from down South, and a professional development squad, Steve arrived looking for early season miles and experience in high level racing. Running in January, before the season proper is even within sight, the Team's expectations were quality miles and some good stories. Steve decided instead to put the pedal to the metal and chase down the team's first results. Despite his exceptional January fitness and gifted genetics, it was no easy task. Steve pulled himself inside out, and then kept pulling, to finish the weekend 4th overall in the Masters 40+ field. This included a stunning two man break in the road race for 50 of the 57 miles, a 6th place in the opening Time Trial, and a solid 7th in the Circuit Race. And he did this without team mates, fending for himself in the battle for wheels and shelter from the wind. All in all, a fantastic weekend for Steve, and an early season treat for Team WHAYNE!

After important races, any good team will talk out the flow of the action, identifying crucial moments and discussing the heat-of-the-moment responses. As this is the first of our racing action in 2012, we thought our supporters and friends might be interested in the play-by-play, direct from the fingers of Steve Hulsman.

Where the rubber meets the road. Grip. Comfort. Speed. No matter the quality of your bike and wheels, if you aren't thumbing on the highest caliber tire, you're experience will be undermined. You could be riding a custom Calfee, tuned to your expectations, with wheels built to your weight and riding style, but if you then install thick training rubber, the road will take a toll on your ride. So, Michelin uses their experience with rubber compounds to craft a grippy, lightweight, and fast rolling tire, that wears at a reasonable rate. Cut resistant, puncture resistant, 200 grams, and available in a wide variety of colors, this tire is the perfect racing and fast training clincher. It will allow your high-zoot bike to perform to its potential, or transform your trusty steed into a confident, fast and responsive experience. Come and get 'em!

Our Kit!

The Yellow, Black, and Green of Team WHAYNE

Whayne Supply and Catepillar both have very bold, simple, and powerful logos... with colors to match. Main Street Bikes brings a highly recognizable shamrock logo with the perfect shade of green to accent. Our Co-Sponsors, Lexion, Genie, and Eaton, also have distinctively styled but simple branding. Mix it all up, and out comes a kit that is composed of simple color blocks framing the sponsor's concise and stylized text. Pop!

The front of the jersey has a predominately white background to keep things cool and to allow our sponsor colors and logos to present themselves as strongly as possible. Around back, the key road spray areas are kept black, as are the shorts, assuring long lasting sharp looks without the staining of lighter materials over time. The shorts and jersey are designed to come together in a skinsuit without any jarring pattern disruption regardless of size, perfect for the mud of cyclocross and mtb.

Working with Voler Apparel, Team WHAYNE has access to patterns of the finest fit and materials of the highest caliber. All crafted by hand in the USA with significant attention paid to a sustainable operations, such as PV powered production and biodegradeable inks used in sublimation. The quality of the materials and production is as high as any cycling kit team members have ever worn, and the vast array of material and cut options allowed Team WHAYNE to design a highly functional kit. For our sponsors, the jersey and shorts present your company as strongly as the medium allows. For our racers, the Voler kit will disappear, allowing the only suffering of the race to be from the stresses of the pace!

Main Street Bikes - The Man, The Shop

Team WHAYNE is excited to be partnering with Main Street Bikes in putting together our racing project. The shop has already proven invaluable in helping us navigate the Louisville-Lexington cycling scene and in equipping our riders to succeed in 2012. But this particular shop is more than just an intimate retail Mecca, with prices and service second to none in the region. It is a place that looks beyond the lycra and the competitive posturing, to see friends on two wheels. A gem of a store, located on the historic Shelbyville Main Street, run by a Hell of a Guy....

"Tom's not just a team sponsor and a bike shop owner. He's a friend and all around good guy. I found this out my first racing season in 2010. Up until then, I hadn't seen Tom since high school almost 20 years ago. My road bike frame had cracked so I called him up hoping he could cut me a deal to build up the replacement frame. "Hey remember me from high school?....wanna cut me a deal on bike parts?" Without hesitation, Tom invited me to Main Street Bikes to dig thru parts and build up the bike. After a couple hours I left with my new ride for tons less than what I'd expected. Thanks Tom.

But that parts bin special paled in comparison to Tom's generosity and thoughtfulness just a couple months later. Three months into my racing "career", I was sprinting at Ault Park's Wednesday night race series when another rider stuck his front wheel into mine. My wheel collapsed and I super-manned over the bars landing onto my shoulder and head. Tons of road rash, one broken collarbone, one broken helmet, two broken wheels, a broken rear derailleur and a shredded kit later, my racing was done for a while. As I painfully eased into recovery mode that night, Tom was already online raising money for the "Doug Fund" to fix my bike and replace my kit and helmet. No one asked him to... he just did it. Not only did Tom raise enough to fix my bike (new wheels, derailleur, etc) and replace my kit and helmet, he even threw in a couple upgrades (goodbye heavy Tektro brakes!) Eight weeks later I was back on my bike. Thanks Tom.

Like I said, Tom's not just a sponsor, he's a friend. Thanks, Tom, and thanks to Main Street Bikes."

-Doug Burton
